If any of the links in this post don't work, please take a look at this link: Which book should I follow to get an under 50 rank in IIT JEE?
A guide to get a top 50 rank in JEE
Here is a comprehensive list of ALL the books. Don't get overwhelmed seeing this long list. You should decide which one suits you.
Also, I will not appreciate questions like "which edition to buy", because I am adding appropriate links below of the editions which I have myself used and are definitely worth purchasing.
Note that I did not use all of the books below. Some of them are famous but I did not use them because some other book was sufficient. So, you need not buy them all.
Past year JEE papers: very very very very very important. Solve each and every question earnestly and make sure to learn from the questions which you weren't able to solve. Also, note that you should always refer to the solution of the book even if you correctly got the answer yourself. This helps you to cross-check your solution as well as learn some (possibly) new solution given in the book. The below past year papers contain more or less the same content. You can choose any of them.
Guidebook: The book below is authored by my friend and senior Arpit Agarwal, who was AIR 1 in JEE 2012. Arpit is currently a fourth year undergraduate at IIT Delhi. Arpit helped me a lot during the last 2 months of JEE by clearing a number of non academic doubts and helping me to develop the required examination temperament. I have never seen such a humble and down to earth person.
As a JEE aspirant, I did not get a chance to read his book because it was published after JEE was over. But I myself bought this book after giving JEE and enjoyed a read. It will show you what distinguishes a JEE top ranker from a dreamer. A must buy book indeed :)
The other book is by Nitin Jain, AIR 1, JEE 2009. I read this book and this book shows you how AIR 1 differs from the rest of the JEE rankers. This book was available online somewhere buy I am not able to find it now.
Nitin Jain's book on JEE guidance is one of the best selling books
Coming to the books of individual subjects:
Physics:
Chemistry:
Mathematics:
Others:
Exemplar Problems: These are the solutions to the exemplar problems prescribed by CBSE. These are must for those who are aiming a good rank in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Note that the problems aren't highly conceptual or something, but they really are useful for competitive exams and you can surely find some lifted question in JEE Main
In this link you can find some really good books that are most commonly used by JEE aspirants
Books for Olympiads can be found here
Note: Brilliant YG files and Akash's Success Magnet (I did not find a link to it) are really good. Also, the material provided by Resonance is excellent and that's why I have added its link here on this page under the others section.

He tried many books and as he has mentioned that he somewhat had a library of books.
DeleteGo through his posts on every subject and FOLLOW what he says. He must have used a lot of time to find out the best book you mustn't do the same & simply follow what he says based on his experience.

DeleteWhich board will be easier for iit preparation?state or CBSE?
ReplyDeleteIs it necessary to join a dummy school for iit preparation?
ReplyDeleteIn class 12,Will JEE count PCM percentage or percentage of all 5 subjects(issued by respective boards)?I am talking about 40% board and 60% jee marks scheme....
ReplyDeleteTotal percentage obtained in Class XII Boards examinations.
Delete40% of BOARDS + 60% of JEE Mains Score.
However, to qualify for JEE-Advanced you must have scored above 75% in Class XII and/or you belong to the top 20 percentile of the respective board. Also, you're to clear the cut-off for JEE-Mains aswell.
Aman Bhaiya please comment on the new JEE Aptitude test.
ReplyDeleteAman Bhaiya please comment on the new JEE Aptitude test.

Dear Aman / Team, Thanks a lot for your selfless service. Regarding buying past years questions papers can you please explain the difference between chapter wise and topic wise books what you have specified above? Q2) Also do we need to buy both ? Please clarify.
ReplyDeleteDear Aman / Team, I am Sowmi and my daughter is studying 11 th std and we are all inspired your blogs and responses. May God bless you and your teem in all the ways. Now onward i decided to deposit min Rs 100 for every answer you are providing to us and am the firm believer of there is no free lunch. So please enable contributions option. I really mean this. Let is be optional.
ReplyDeleteQ1) Now coming to back to questions can you please explain what does the "Exemplar Problems: These are the solutions to the exemplar problems prescribed by CBSE." means ?
Q2) She is already studying cbse books and do you recommend to buy these also ?
Q3) I read almost most of the your blogs and it seems we need to first be thorough with CBSE books and then coaching institutes material and then go for the recommended books. Is this sequence is correct ? Please provide a link if you already covered this sequencing of studying somewhere else ?
Replying after a long time
DeleteA1) http://www.ncert.nic.in/NCERTS/textbook/textbook_hindi.html
A2) Yes, you should definitely consider buying advanced level books. CBSE books are good, but aren't enough for competitive exams. A comprehensive list can be found here: http://amangoeliitb.blogspot.com/p/books-section.html
A3) No. This isn't a right strategy. The idea is to read advanced textbooks to cover the syllabus and at the same time ensure that nothing from CBSE syllabus is left out
Thanks a lot aman. Can you please respond to other question also. I pasted it here again.

ReplyDeleteQ. what should be the strategy to complete the jee mains syllabus. i mean should i solve all the questions from my coaching workbook or should i just try to grab and remember all the concepts first and then approach to problem solving after going through the entire syllabus.
solving lots of questions at time of studying a particular chapter is taking a lot of time because no. of questions in my workbook is very large.
i am the student of Aakash iTutor program.
please reply. i am very confused and it will be very great help for me if you guide me.
thank you.
You should solve as many problems as possible. This is the best strategy. Of course you have to ensure that you have read enough theory!

Also let me know how should i revise maths, coz when i study a particular topic, i solve cengage completely with very few doubts or questions which i am not able to solve (without looking at soln). ReplyDeleteLG Wade was never deleted. It's just not mentioned here. Will add it
DeleteThanks. I though that u won't answer cause my comment would be lost in this long comment list but I think u answers query which u feel relevant. So thanks again to treat my question relevant
DeleteI also had one more question hope u answer there is no need for u to reply in long sentences cause I know u must be busy these days
Delete1. I love the content of Arihant series of maths and physics but my teachers say me that it has irrelevant things and recommend me cengage.. I feel the word "irrelevant " for them would be for an average rank and those things are required for <50 rank. So what is your thought about Arihant with cengage comparison for maths and physics
Thanks
You are very right about Arihant books. Even I was told the same - it has irrelevant things. However, during my time, I read somewhere that most of the toppers study Arihant books and so, I also studied Arihant books and they were just fantastic!
DeleteYou can take a look here: https://amangoeliitb.blogspot.in/p/books-for-mathematics.html

ReplyDeleteHello bhaiya
ReplyDeleteM sorry I am disturbing u but I need your help as it is really crucial time for me .( i know you have your life and i am really happy that u are really helping lakhs of jee aspirants for JEE but reading this mail it would take some time and answering too , as you are also busy in your proffesional life but i would be greatful if u pls answer my doubts plss).
Some basic information about myself( I m in 12th class , I live in kota and have joined a coaching institute Vibrant Academy and dummy school. My coaching is off for about 40 days and I wanna revise fully with concepts and problems in these 40 days. My 11th wasn't that good it was average . I am very slow learner but I am hardworking I have faced same problem as u have I have read all your blogs and it has helped alot. I am ready to give all sort of efforts and (work hard ) to the power infinity for JEE and is truly mad for IIT Bombay CSE but I need your guidance )
I have few questions
1.) Is concept building or problem solving is important in physics and maths and chemistry . clearing concept takes my half of the time and understand them deeply ( as , how this happens , why it happens like why not like this. For eg T-mg=ma I think where did it came from and I took time to get answer and the answer was : Vector addition ) and am not able to get time to solve questions. But my coaching notes are always on my tips .So pls help at this point what should I do?
2.) How you use to solve problems like were u used to stop after solving and see what u have done and ask questions why I did this , I should have done it the other way , why is used this formula) or u used to move on after getting the answer of a question to next one is the above approach right or the one u followed ????
3.) Is reading and understanding books important I haven't bought book for physical and inorganic chem . what I am thinking of I must try my 100% to understand the concepts at the coaching and when I come I go through notes and then to books for better understanding of concepts and move on to the questions this way I will be able to solve more problems what do u think???
4.) Can 11th be completed in these 40 days I know all can't be able to but max could be so for it how many hours should I study to complete it minimum hours and what must be my routine in these days ???
It would be nice of you if u give me some detailed answers thankyou
Thankyou so very much for reading this really grateful if u have read it .
Sir
