Preparation for other exams

There are a variety of competitive exams besides JEE advanced. Some common ones being KVPY, JEE main, national standard examination in physics (NSEP),  national standard examination in chemistry(NSEC) , Indian national physics olympiad(INPhO) , Indian national chemistry olympiad(INChO) , BITsat, and state entrance exams.
Except olympiads, the other exams can be easily cracked if you have prepared well for Jee advanced.
Jee main syllabus contains a few topics that are not covered in jee advanced syllabus. But covering them is no big deal. Just study ncert books for these topics and you are done. Same goes for KVPY and state entrance exams.
The problem comes with olympiads. You qualify to appear for INPhO and INChO. These exams require indepth knowledge of the topics. These are subjective exams and are much above the traditional jee level. These exams test your knowledge and not your speed(compare it with jee which focuses mainly on speed).
You need to have a firm grip on concepts and an idea of how to "write" rather than "tick".
Around 40 students are declared as "pass" in INPhO and INChO each. If you clear these, then you are eligible to appear for olympiad camps held in Mumbai. Clearing the camps let's you participate in international olympiads!!
Here are some books that are useful.
Physics olympiad: IE irodov, past year papers.
Chemistry olympiad: past year papers.
This year(2013) because the INPhO paper was extremely tough, the cutoff was very low(31/60). The details can be found at www.olympiads.hbcse.tifr
Do appear for NSEP and NSEC.
Cracking the above competitive exams boosts your confidence.

  1. bhaiyya, does not being able to clear incho/inpho/inmo means that one cannot clear jee advanced with a good rank?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Not at all. My friend Anand bhoraskar (air 3 in jee 2013) couldn't clear any of the nse's, forget about the ino's
Same goes with pranjal khare(air 10).
I guess they will kill me after reading this post :P

    1. do u mean that olympiads have no connection with jee advanced...like clearing them does not approve u of a good rank in iitjee..

      Delete
    2. I dont mean what you are saying because in general those who do well in jee do well in olympiads.
What I Mean to say is that olympiads are subjective exams and test your deep understanding skills without focusing on time boundation.
But iitjee is an objective exam. You cant Compare the 2
And yes: clearing olympiads does not approve u of a good rank in iitjee..
Last day matters a lot for iitjee irrespective of your level of preparation
I'll be writing a post on "d day" soon

  3. Hi AMAN,

IS IT NECESSARY TO FINISH 12TH CLASS SYLLABUS BEFORE PREPARING FOR OLYMPIADS?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe yes!
Olympiads(second level) are not something that any tom dick or harry can crack.
They need deep analysis of almost every aspect of syllabus.
By the time I appeared for INPhO and INChO, my syllabus in both subjects was completed

    2. Hi AMAN,

Presently i am in class 11th with just 3 months left for the beginning of class 12th. How should i start preparing for Olympiads fulfilling the above condition?

      Delete
    3. Prepare your JEE syllabus well.
Nothing more is needed for olympiads.
Make sure that you are practicing ample of subjective problems from the above mentioned books.
This will help you not only in olympiads but also in JEE.

I don't know about this year's paper. If it was of almost same toughness as last year, then congos you have made it (Y)

    3. Aman , thanks a lot i made the cut.. cutoff was 52/98... can you give me a detailed advice on how to prepare for the chemistry ocsc .. and how to manage jee studies along with it. ... i somehow want to crack ocsc and get into the indian team as then i will have plenty of scope to apply for foreign institues if i get to participate in icho..

      Delete
    4. Congratulations!!!!
See, I cannot tell you much about it because I didn't attend the camp.
But what you should do is to check the complete syllabus. It will be huuuuuuuuuge and you will see that there are a lot of topics that you haven't even heard of.
Then you will realize that there is a part called biochemistry about which probably you have read practically nothing. So, you will have to prepare bits of it. Then, you will have to cover spectrometry (Francis carrey is a good book for this).
When I qualified for Chemistry ocsc, this is what I did but in the end, I didn't go to the camps.

Advice : At once you will be fascinated by : "INChO qualified - Camps - Mumbai". But take your time and think about it. Last year around 40 people got qualified for the camp but only 20 attended because other 20 didn't want to compromise with JEE. So, take your decision wisely. If you can manage the 2, then go for it!
      All the best

      Delete
    5. But the camp is after jee .. so all the 40 people are surely going to attend it

      Delete
    6. haa can you give much more detailed info about how and what to study .. like you told biochemistry ans spectrocopy and... yaa i am going to go for it

    1. See, last year paper was extremely tough (It was one of the toughest INPhO paper) so the cutoff was as low as 31. But usually this is not the case. The cutoff is above 40 (maybe around 45). So, I really can't say anything.
But for INChO, I think you should qualify easily (again, keep your expectations low)

  30. Since you mentioned that NSECs and INPhO & INChO....these are mainly subjective examinations checking our understanding of the subject:
1)Do the past year JEE subjective questions help in INPhO & INChO?
2)Can you say anything about weightage of topics in the mentioned exams?(like it is done in JEE)
3)I scrolled through the post n found something called 'BioChemistry'.Is it in NSEC & INChO syllabus?

  31. Hello Sir!!
I've found all of your articles quite useful and motivative for students including me.
I just wanted you to, if possible, describe in detail about the hardwork and efforts that must be put into, in order to crack NSEs, because olympiads require more stamina and in-depth knowledge.

Also please tell me how much hours must be spent for the subject of physics in order to crack NSEP. Do I need to put extra efforts for these exams or is it that preparation for olympiads and IIT-JEE go hand in hand?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To crack NSEs - You simply don't need "any" extra efforts.
At least, I never solve even a single problem of NSE
      I never studied for olympiads
I prepared only and only for iitjee 2013 (which later became jee advanced 2013)
my target was an under 100 rank in jee and nothing else
I sat for NSEP - cracked it , sat for NSEC - cracked.
For INPhO and INChO, i had to do special preparations - like writing the answers in a clear readable manner etc.
