Qualitative analysis - requires quality study

Qualitative analysis is viewed as one of the most difficult chapters of inorganic chemistry because it requires sheer cramming with little or rather no logic. This is the perception of most JEE aspirants. But my view is a bit different.
If you study from a good source(which has been mentioned below) then I don't think that this chapter is that difficult as a JEE aspirant feels.
Here are a few tips :
1.) Prepare this chapter by "writing" the reactions on a notebook. You might feel that if you just read it once, then you are done but the case is different. An average JEE aspirant doesn't have that high IQ level. And it has been scientifically proved that we remember things better if we write them once. So carry pen and paper with you when you study this chapter.
2.) A good and reliable study material with a simple language is the best. For example - I used FIITJEE packages parallel to a book called Vogel's qualitative analysis. It's a good book but it is not meant for JEE. You have to study only about 15% of that book for JEE. You might like to try something else. But the above 2 must be sufficient. Note that instead of FIITJEE packages, you might have a different package. But don't worry, all are more or less the same.
3.) Solve a number of problems especially the past year problems. Don't miss a single problem from at least past 25 years. They repeat the questions from this chapter.
4.) In the end, the most important thing is revision. As I have already mentioned in my inorganic chemistry post, all the chapters of inorganic chemistry (qualitative analysis included) require intense revision. You are highly likely to forget everything you did if you do not revise say once a week.

  7. this is my strategy to finish dis topic-

day1-Ag+ (all reactions and related topics)
day2-Fe+3 (all reaxn and related topics)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    so on....

    is this strategy correct

    2. Hi, I think I can help you with a strategy... The book that Aman mentioned, is really the ultimate book on QA... But you don't need all of it... Every cation identification involves a large number of reactions, with plenty of reagents, both inorganic and organic.. As far JEE is concerned, you need only the inorganic part...
The best way to prepare is to write them all in a notebook, with the colour of each ppt, soln with the ink of those colors... Believe me, it really helps, they get etched to your brain... But something is just rote learning, for examplr PbCl2 is soluble more in hot water than in cold water... I think JEE asked a problem about this....

    1. Because you are searching in high standard books and not in the GodBook : NCERT
It's there in NCERT (in the chapter - coordination compounds)

      Delete
  11. I think that using pencil colours for colouring the compounds while making notes may help you.... It really helps in remembering the colours of compounds.... Well, that was the thing I used to do and thats why love Qualitative Analysis.....

  12. Hey Aman, what do you recommend--Studying only those ions which are mentioned in the JEE syllabus or finish 'em all given in packages (like FIITJEE & BRILLIANT)? Actually, JEE past year questions reveal the fact that they sometimes add an ion among the four options, to make it confusing of course, b'cz those ions never come out to be the answers. Moreover, packages contain ions such as thiosulphite (not in syllabus); so I wonder if coaching institutes don't know the syllabus or if there is a purpose behind cramming 'em all?

    Waiting for a quick reply...

  13. Aman, as per your suggestion i searched for the Vogel's Qualitative Inorganic Analysis book.

There are 2 different books by same name. Here are the links. Kindly point out the book you followed. It will be helpful to other users as well.

I will be appearing for JEE 2015 and I have pretty much screwed up my class 11nth concepts( since I didn't join any coaching and I didn't have any idea about JEE at that time )...
Now I am looking for a good coaching centre which completes jee syllabus in one year( one year program ).
Can you recommend me a good coaching institute please???
Also, Is it possible to get great rank with one year preparation....

Thank you very much in advance..

  19. Hello Aman Bhaiyaa I am Manish(your quora follower).I am taking a partial drop for Mains(primary) and Advanced(second preference). I am pretty weak in Maths and right now I am making notes in this vacation period.
I won't take coaching again as my concepts are fairly okay and joining State level engg college.
I am following SK Goyal for algebra and Cengage for Calculus and Coord. Geom.
    Are they good book?
I am also doing Solomons for org. Chemistry.
Besides can you suggest some more ideas for quick revision and retention of topics?
