This branch of chemistry is somewhat similar to Physics and people are fond of it because it involves least mugging out of the 3 branches of JEE chemistry
The chapter on mole concept is most important.
There are other chapters :
- Stoichiometry : This was the most difficult chapter for me because I couldn't decipher the secrets of this chapter till the end of my preparation. You are expected to know a number of redox reactions (potassium dichromate , potassium permanganate , sulphur dioxide , hydrogen peroxide etc etc). So you will be comfortable with this chapter only after completing inorganic chemistry. So be patient here.
- Equilibrium : Easiest and my favourite. Most logical. Make sure that you are strong not only in numericals but also on theory based problems of this chapter.
- Thermodynamics : Difficult one. The material available in market is flooded with second and third law of thermodynamics in detail. But that's something useless. Third law is not in syllabus and second law - only brief discussion + entropy calculation is there in syllabus. Make sure that you are comfortable with thermochemistry.
- Chemical Kinetics : again an easy one with very little syllabus
- Electro-chemistry : BIG GUN! Just 1 equation - "Nernst's equation" and unlimited applications. If you are not comfortable with any of the above mentioned chapter then this one's gonna be a nightmare
- States of matter : simple one but cover liquid states thoroughly(the colligative properties part)
- Nuclear Chemistry : easy one. But make sure you know the terms , definitions and properties
- Surface Chemistry : is this a part of physical chemistry ?? Most take it as inorganic chemistry. Don't ignore this one or else you are going to regret (for proof check JEE 2012 paper). NCERT is must here.
Hi AMAN,
ReplyDeleteI purchased op tendon when i was in class 10th but now with the wise advice of my teachers i have stopped using the book apart from solving problems. I AM CURRENTLY FOLLOWING NCERT but the applications and theory given in the physical chemistry part of the are limited as far as JEE is concerned. SUGGEST ME A GOOD REFERENCE BOOK TO BE FOLLOWED IN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY ALONG WITH NCERT?
Thanks for the suggestion of Lg WADE this book has good application based theory. FROM WHERE DID YOU PRACTICE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS? i am currently following only the fiitjee module questions and the CPP provided.
OP tondon is a good book for physical chemistry.
ReplyDeleteIt covers a variety of problems.
However it contains a number of repeated problems so make sure you are not solving same problem 100 times with just changed numerical data.
NCERT is ofcourse a must book to be followed.
but for problems / additional concepts - use op tondon book.
for organic practice - fiitjee material + past year problems + cpps is enough
thanks for your good reply.
DeleteAman,
DeleteIn O P Tandon's Physical Chem, there is a section called "Brain storming problems for IIT aspirants", How useful is it ?
{I solved a few of these questions from States of Matter chap. and found them to be just a mix of concepts in a single question rather being that tough}
Please don't reply to old comments.
DeleteIt's difficult for me to track them.
Rather, you can post them in the end.
Coming to the point, Brain storming problems are sometimes good. I never tried them but you might give them a try
Sir
DeleteThough ur choice of joining some good institute must have been on sound Reece. I m not preferring for some inst. Rather some subject teachers like PhD iit chemistry(writes books also) maths iit writing books for good publisher. Is it advisable to follow the mix of studying this ways...
Aman bhaiya suggest a source for the chapter chemical bonding I m finding it difficult
ReplyDeleteNCERT is the best. This chapter has been discussed in detail in NCERT
Delete#dont call me bhaiya :)

Deleteat home, what did u used to do first:- RC Mukherjee or fiitjee package??
ReplyDeletefiitjee packages
Deleteok..and did you do rc mukherjee side by side with fiitjee package or at the end??
DeleteBoth!
DeleteYou won't be able to complete the book side by side.
DeleteSo you'll have to solve the remaining part in the end
hey aman bro we need a similar chapter to chapter analysis of mechanics
ReplyDeleteSure. Gimme a couple of days
DeleteWhich is the best test series for JEE advance
ReplyDeleteIf you feel that you have the potential of getting a 2 digit rank then go for fiitjee else go for resonance.
DeleteIf you have even the slightest doubt about your jee preparation then don't go for fiitjee. It will degrade your confidence to such an extent that you won't be able to rise back.
In any case resonance test series might prove to be a really good option
Hi AMAN,
ReplyDeleteCan you guide me on how to study conic sections with perfection? As it has many formulas in it. How much weight age does it have in JEE.
How did you study this chapter?
Conic sections- has some 30-40% weightage in jee.
DeleteYou may include circles, ellipse, parabola, hyperbola, and maybe straight lines too in Conics or rather coordinate geometry.
Very very important, scoring as well as easy part of jee syllabus.
I'll write on it
this is reliable
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thedigilibrary.com/tdl/iitjee-registration?gclid=CNSu4dCOxrsCFaI34godNggAHg#
Can u say anything about University chemistry by Bruce m. mahan?? Is it a good book??
ReplyDeletenever heard of it
DeleteCan you give the complete list of reactions to be learnt for stoichiometry?
ReplyDeleteyou really don't need to "learn" organic chemistry.
Deletestick to LG Wade and you'll enjoy
No, not organic i think u misread it. U said there were some reactions that are required for the stoichiometry chapter, I would like a list of those please.
Deleteoops sorry.
Deletealmost all the reactions are there in NCERT
Whenever i revise Atomic structure,i always feel that i should go beyond the syllabus like how were all the formulas derived etc. Please advise should i go for it??Like is it a wastage of time??Upto what level should this chapter be prepared particularly for JEE and OLYMPIADS??
ReplyDeleteBoth for JEE as well as olympiads, It's a waste of time.
DeleteEven here in B.Tech, they just tell us the formula without the derivation
So do u mean that i should just memorize the formulas and apply it.??
DeleteYes, this exactly is expected from a class 11th/12th student is expected at JEE level
DeleteI just want to know 3 thing from you
ReplyDelete1. what was your revision strategy (means whether in revision u did old question which u did in past 2 years again or u whole did new questions)
2. did u complete the whole fiitjee booklet or used other books for your preparation
3. how will you rate fiitjee classroom packages of only chemistry and mathematics ------ easy moderate or tough and why
Actually i used other books for these past 2 years of preparation and i planned to complete the whole fiitjee packages during my revision. Now i find that in fiitjee booklets all question are of different varieties which was difficult for me to find in other books which i was using n these past 2 years. Had i used fiitjee booklets earlier i could have done good in both AITS and phase tests. So this is the problem for me
1. Of course, I solved new questions. However I also practised some of the old problems which I had star marked during my preparation as excellent question
Delete2. I have mentioned this at numerous places. Look it. I am too lazy to type it again
3. between tough and moderate
Of course FIITJEE material is not "the" best. The best material depends on how you use it
actually by second question i really meant that when u used a particular book for a particular chapter then whether u completed that chapter A - Z from that book or just did some good questions from that book
DeleteHello...i have 2 questions...i am a 2015 IIT-JEE aspirant....
ReplyDelete1)how important is extractive metallurgy for IIT-JEE??
2)u mentioned in ur post of organic that the problem book by m.s chauhan is really tough....so how do u rate the book problems in physical & inorganic chemistry by N.Avasti nd V.K Jaiswal....as compared to M.S Chauhan???
1.) it's importance can be checked in JEE past year papers
Delete2.) Stop asking about various books please. I haven't studied all books
I have a doubt whether we have to memorize the wavelengths in atomic structure & s-block elements flame test?
ReplyDeletethere is a table in NCERT which contains colours. Memorize it and you are done.
Deletewhat used to be your percentile in FIITJEE AITS mainly the percentiles of part tests
ReplyDelete99.9 or 99.8 or 99.7 usually
DeleteBut most frequent was 99.8 i guess
I don't remember the exact figure
IS IT ADVISABLE TO ALWAYS KEEP SOME GOOD QUESTIONS IN OUR MIND
ReplyDeleteFOR EVERY TOPIC OF PCM ?? AS IT MAY HELP TO RECALL THE ENTIRE CHAPTER
IN OUR MIND ONLY IN 2-3 MINUTES OR WE NEED TO OPE THE NOTES REGULARLY
AND REVISE
You yourself have given the answer - "AS IT MAY HELP TO RECALL THE ENTIRE CHAPTER"
Deleteof course it's advisable
For reading, RC Mukherjee is not a good choice.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about P.Bahadur.
OP tondon is the best for theory
plz suggest a book for numericals of chem and ionic eqilibrium.....
ReplyDeleteRC Mukherjee(if you aim for under 1000 rank)
DeleteOP Tondon(otherwise)
thnx......
DeletePlease read the posts in Revision corner
ReplyDeleteI have heard that chemistry for JEE requires a lot of mugging of topics. What topics are those that essentially requires one to mug up?
ReplyDeleteIn which standard are you currently studying ?
DeleteI am currently studying in XI standard. At current, i only find s & p block + hydrogen chapter which requires mugging up. Though i doubt it will have much importance at JEE
DeleteI think you haven't prepared well.
DeleteYou will soon realize why it is said that chemistry requires a lot of mugging

DeleteHi Aman,
ReplyDeleteI am a JEE 2015 aspirant. I am weak in Ionic Equilibrium. No spontaneous thoughts appear for how to solve the problem. Presently trying RC Mukerjee , but unable to do more than half of them .PLEASE HELP.
try OP tondon. It is more descriptive as compared to RC Mukherjee
DeletePS : RC mukherjee is to be tried only when you have mastered the topic
should we do all questions of o.p tandon or the standard one(i.e.questions which came in previous entrance exam) ?
ReplyDeleteplease mention the year in which you are appearing for JEE

ReplyDeletehi once again.. :) can you give me some tips regarding electrochemistry and from where should i study it..?
ReplyDeleteDid you follow any other book along p bahadur and r c mukherjee(both for theory and problems)?
ReplyDeleteHi Aman, any advice on how to solve both OP Tandon and RC Mukherjee problems since they are too many. Also, did u try the objective questions of OP Tandon too?
ReplyDeleteThis is Arnab, preparing for jee 2015,I'M facing much problems in physical chemistry, please suggest me some tips how to develop concepts(name of books) in physical chemistry.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI wanted to ask if OP Tandon is that necessary as I am having RC Mukherjee. I do theory from class notes and questions from RC Mukherjee and fiitjee packages.
Is r.c mukherjee good or op tandon?
ReplyDeleteWhat should be the suggested order of chapters(such that each chapter is a prerequisite of the next one)? please help.
ReplyDeleteAman,From NCERT Textbook,You meant to say That National Council Of Education Research And Traning !! If Yes,then from where I can gEt iT
ReplyDeleteHello Aman,
ReplyDeleteIm a JEE 16 aspirant and our classes have started Thermodynamics a week ago but our teacher is not good at explanations at all and I need to fully redo what has been taught till now. Can you suggest a book that has best explanations of concepts?
Is it OP Tandon or NCERT or any other book?
Please reply quickly, it would help a lot!
Is OP Tandon only good for theory or problems as well? If not then RC Mukherjee is the way to go?
ReplyDeleteJEE 16 aspirant aiming for AIR < 100.
I am a JEE 2017 aspirant and I started my preparation in April this year. In case of R.C. Mukherjee which questions did you solve during the beginning of your preparation, the examples or the exercise problems? In case of either, did you solve ALL the problems? I am finding the problems quite interesting but I am also worried about facing shortage of time later during my preparation, since the book has a huge number of both examples and exercises. What did you do about it?
