Physical chemistry - on demand

This is a post on Physical chemistry (as demanded by most people).
This branch of chemistry is somewhat similar to Physics and people are fond of it because it involves least mugging out of the 3 branches of JEE chemistry
The chapter on mole concept is most important.
There are other chapters :


  • Stoichiometry : This was the most difficult chapter for me because I couldn't decipher the secrets of this chapter till the end of my preparation. You are expected to know a number of redox reactions (potassium dichromate , potassium permanganate , sulphur dioxide , hydrogen peroxide etc etc). So you will be comfortable with this chapter only after completing inorganic chemistry. So be patient here.
  • Equilibrium : Easiest and my favourite. Most logical. Make sure that you are strong not only in numericals but also on theory based problems of this chapter.
  • Thermodynamics : Difficult one. The material available in market is flooded with second and third law of thermodynamics in detail. But that's something useless. Third law is not in syllabus and second law - only brief discussion + entropy calculation is there in syllabus. Make sure that you are comfortable with thermochemistry.
  • Chemical Kinetics : again an easy one with very little syllabus
  • Electro-chemistry : BIG GUN! Just 1 equation - "Nernst's equation" and unlimited applications. If you are not comfortable with any of the above mentioned chapter then this one's gonna be a nightmare
  • States of matter : simple one but cover liquid states thoroughly(the colligative properties part)
  • Nuclear Chemistry : easy one. But make sure you know the terms , definitions and properties
  • Surface Chemistry : is this a part of physical chemistry ?? Most take it as inorganic chemistry. Don't ignore this one or else you are going to regret (for proof check JEE 2012 paper). NCERT is must here.

    Hi AMAN,

    I purchased op tendon when i was in class 10th but now with the wise advice of my teachers i have stopped using the book apart from solving problems. I AM CURRENTLY FOLLOWING NCERT but the applications and theory given in the physical chemistry part of the are limited as far as JEE is concerned. SUGGEST ME A GOOD REFERENCE BOOK TO BE FOLLOWED IN PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY ALONG WITH NCERT?

    Thanks for the suggestion of Lg WADE this book has good application based theory. FROM WHERE DID YOU PRACTICE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS? i am currently following only the fiitjee module questions and the CPP provided.

    OP tondon is a good book for physical chemistry.
    It covers a variety of problems.
    However it contains a number of repeated problems so make sure you are not solving same problem 100 times with just changed numerical data.
    NCERT is ofcourse a must book to be followed.
    but for problems / additional concepts - use op tondon book.
    for organic practice - fiitjee material + past year problems + cpps is enough

      Aman,
      In O P Tandon's Physical Chem, there is a section called "Brain storming problems for IIT aspirants", How useful is it ?
      {I solved a few of these questions from States of Matter chap. and found them to be just a mix of concepts in a single question rather being that tough}

      Though ur choice of joining some good institute must have been on sound Reece. I m not preferring for some inst. Rather some subject teachers like PhD iit chemistry(writes books also) maths iit writing books for good publisher. Is it advisable to follow the mix of studying this ways...

      If you feel that you have the potential of getting a 2 digit rank then go for fiitjee else go for resonance.
      If you have even the slightest doubt about your jee preparation then don't go for fiitjee. It will degrade your confidence to such an extent that you won't be able to rise back.
      In any case resonance test series might prove to be a really good option

      Conic sections- has some 30-40% weightage in jee.
      You may include circles, ellipse, parabola, hyperbola, and maybe straight lines too in Conics or rather coordinate geometry.
      Very very important, scoring as well as easy part of jee syllabus.

      Both for JEE as well as olympiads, It's a waste of time.
      Even here in B.Tech, they just tell us the formula without the derivation

    I just want to know 3 thing from you
    1. what was your revision strategy (means whether in revision u did old question which u did in past 2 years again or u whole did new questions)
    2. did u complete the whole fiitjee booklet or used other books for your preparation
    3. how will you rate fiitjee classroom packages of only chemistry and mathematics ------ easy moderate or tough and why
    Actually i used other books for these past 2 years of preparation and i planned to complete the whole fiitjee packages during my revision. Now i find that in fiitjee booklets all question are of different varieties which was difficult for me to find in other books which i was using n these past 2 years. Had i used fiitjee booklets earlier i could have done good in both AITS and phase tests. So this is the problem for me

      1. Of course, I solved new questions. However I also practised some of the old problems which I had star marked during my preparation as excellent question
      2. I have mentioned this at numerous places. Look it. I am too lazy to type it again

      Of course FIITJEE material is not "the" best. The best material depends on how you use it

    I am a JEE 2017 aspirant and I started my preparation in April this year. In case of R.C. Mukherjee which questions did you solve during the beginning of your preparation, the examples or the exercise problems? In case of either, did you solve ALL the problems? I am finding the problems quite interesting but I am also worried about facing shortage of time later during my preparation, since the book has a huge number of both examples and exercises. What did you do about it?
