Physics, something really "Real"...

Physics was my favorite subject. I was initially pretty weak at physics (the mechanics part). But in class 12th, I came across one of my teachers who changed my perception about Physics. He supported me a lot and it was because of his support/guidance that I was able to crack INPhO and was also selected to represent India at the 14th Asian Physics Olympiad, Indonesia in the 8 member team (although I didn't participate in it because it's date clashed with JEE advanced registration dates).
No doubt, HC Verma is the best book for Physics.

Physics can be broadly divided into the following parts:

1.)Mechanics : for this, HC Verma is the best (along with

NCERT) for theory and for practice, IE Irodov is the right book. You can also try DC Pandey. Mechanics requires intense practice and good exposure to a number of questions. It is one of the most scoring part of JEE Paper.

2.)Thermodynamics : Again, for this part, HC Verma is sufficient. From this part there will be around 3-5 questions in the JEE paper.

3.)Electricity and Magnetism : For this part HC Verma is not enough. You need to go beyond that, because in JEE, there will rarely be any straight - forward question from this part. Having a command in this part will definitely give you an edge over others because it has a huge weightage in the JEE paper.

4.)Optics : One of the easiest branch of Physics if prepared well. Most  scoring and easy to grasp. But, beware - this part has the widest scope of silly - mistakes. Sign convention must be kept in mind otherwise the question is bound to go wrong.

5.)Modern Physics : Tough nut to crack. Difficult, quite theoretical. This part, besides numericals has a lot of theory based questions. So prepare well especially the Radioactivity and the X-Ray part. HC Verma and NCERT must be thoroughly covered for this section.

To summarize, HC Verma is the best book for Physics. But don't ignore NCERT. Read complete NCERT atleast 2-3 times. You will definitely find something new.

If you simply study Physics, then it isn't going to work. You need to feel it, enjoy it and more than that apply it.

My fiitjee teachers recommend to use pradeep's fundamental physics but Raghu mahajan'(AIR-1 in IIT - 2006 and AIEEE- 2006) says in his blog :- The Blacklist of Publishers: If you are reading a book by any one of these publishers, you are probably not on the right track: Pradeep, Krishna, Modern’s,Gupta and Gupta. These books are literally trash and should not be read by anyone.
PLEASE SUGGEST WHAT SHOULD I DO?

    3. HC Verma + NCERT + Resnick Halliday(Only if required) that's it.
Further , You may refer to DC pandey (Arihant) books for good questions.
I have no information about the book that you mentioned.
If you want then I can provide you reviews from many top rankers of IIT JEE who are in IIT Bombay (atleast the 42 top 100 rankers in Computer science branch). That's all I can do.

I would recommend solving this chapter from irodov.
It's a really good book for mechanics.
People think that it contains too difficult problems, far beyond human approach but if your concepts are strong then you will enjoy this book

  9. The book-understanding physics for jee by DC Pandey(which contains theory and questions) is a good book and is used by a number of Jee aspirants.

  10. hey i have just had a look at irodov's questions and i feel that they are actually different from jee questions.
what is your take on this ?
are there top top 50 rankers you may know of who have got the top 50 rank without irodov , solely depending on their coaching material(fiitjee in my case ) and hc verma ..?

    ReplyDelete
  11. yes there are friends who never picked up irodov
i can bet - all top 50 rankers have 50 different types of preparation strategies.
so you can't just say - "with irodov or without irodov"
if you wan't to get a grip over the subject then go for it (it's the best book available) and believe me - solving this book is going to make your confidence sky high.
however if you feel that you are unable to do the problems then leave the book and try some other book

    Which one did you use?

thanks in advance for ur reply!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well waves is something I am still scared of
    of.
We have a quantum physics course in our first semester wherein we are supposed to find out the wave function in various cases by solving the famous shrodinger equation and I am horrible at that.
Anyways hc verma is a good option.
For practice, fiitjee material is good enough.
If you can anyhow get Bansal's material then that's the best for waves

    1. See the level of paper varies a great deal.
For example JEE 2013 contained one of the easiest physics portion in the history of JEE. Many people managed to score above 100/120 in physics.
But in some years it's not that easy so you need a rigorous practice.
That's why taking a risk is not advisable and it is recommended that you prepare for all circumstances.
For this, irodov is the recommended book.
You should solve a number of subjective problems. It will definitely be useful because these days what is done is that objective questions are framed from the subjective questions.
Neither dc pandey nor hc verma can guarantee a good score.
But irodov will do so if you solve it earnestly.
Else in the end for tougher level of objective + subjective problems, go for fiitjee Gmp. It's the best for physics.
And also note that I was good at physics (113/120 in JEE) so I could handle irodov and GMP well.
In a situation where you are not comfortable with either of the two, leave it and go ahead with hc verma or dc pandey.
You do not want to get outstanding score in physics and extremely poor scores in the other two.
This answer has been written keeping in mind that u r a JEE 2014 aspirant.
      And thanks for reminder.

    2. Thank you for your valuable reply!!

and you guessed it right that i am an aspirant taking JEE on 2014!!

PS: can we solve irodov for all the branches of physics or should we stick to only mechanics and electricity magnetism
(i.e., is it good also for waves, thermodynamics, optics and modern physics as well)?

Thanking you in advance and a very Happy New Year!!!

      Delete
    3. Keeping in mind you have limited time in hand, you only need to solve selected problems of irodov that too of mechanics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics
I didn't solve other chapters because they are not relevant to JEE
Keep in mind that if your syllabus is still not completed then don't do irodov.
Complete your syllabus first and solve more of objective problems.
Irodov is something that is to be done when there is enough time in hand and is done parallel to the chapters

    1. First of all define enough
Does "enough" imply just selection in JEE or a 4 digit rank : yes then enough
Does it imply a 2 or 3 digit rank : no not at all enough.

      Delete
    2. If we tend to aim for a 2 or 3 digit rank..then what else should we use for theory purpose..not questions but theory only..ie. to learn concepts..??

    3. If you are for JEE 14 then stick to problem solving. Nothing new now.
If you are a JEE 15 aspirant then purchase "Resnick Halliday ".
It's really good for theory and for self study
Note that the problems might not be that good because they are long and descriptive. However some problems are super good.
In short, it's the best book for learning physics through self study but you have to be smart about how to make the best use of it without diverting from JEE syllabus.

      Delete
    4. being a JEE 15 aspirant..for 2 digit rank..can we say that fully devoting ourselves to ncert+hc verma+resnick halliday+ie irodov is sufficient for both theory and questions purpose??

    5. Again it all depends on how well you are able to use these books.
99% of the JEE aspirants use the above mentioned books (and almost every student in Kota)
But only a handful of them qualify the exam so not just the resources matter, but also how well you utilize your resources.

  40. Hi aman,

I wanted to ask that did ur Physics teacher start any topic from the grass root level or the basic level?
How did he used to begin a chapter and end it?

Usually in the top batches of the coaching institutes the top batch teachers don't begin a chapter from the basics because they think that the kid might have done the basics earlier at home or school. AS most top batch kids are from dummy they have a lot of time to cover the basic part related to the topic but those who go to school may see a clash in the coverage of the topics differently in the coaching institute and school

IN YOUR CASE, u were in the top batch so did see this thing in ur teachers of ignoring the basics.

For some kids this problem of weak basics creates problem for them while they are learning the topics.
CAN U PROVIDE SOME VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS ON THIS ISSUE?

    ReplyDelete

    1. the teacher started from the basics. He assumed that we haven't done anything in advance.
