Inorganic chemistry, key to getting a TOP rank in IIT-JEE...

Surprised ?? Yes this indeed is the bitter truth.. Inorganic chemistry is that branch of chemistry which most toppers study very seriously as compared to others and this is where they defeat others.

Well I am writing on inorganic chemistry first, because most students think that "Ahhh, JEE tests only concepts and logic, there will be hardly any question from inorganic part" . Moreover, some think that "inorganic is wrote learning. I will do it in the end". But the truth is that besides testing your thinking ability, JEE also tests your memorizing capacity through the memory based questions asked under inorganic chemistry and some part of organic chemistry(Practical organic chemistry).

I can give you numerous examples of students who didn't give importance to inorganic chemistry, and got a rank which was higher(higher means higher in magnitude) than what they deserved. One such example is my friend, Aniket Gupta (AIR-641, IIT-JEE 2013) who neglected chemistry(mostly inorganic chemistry). He was superb at Maths and Physics and he could have easily got a rank under 500 had he studied inorganic chemistry seriously.

For inorganic chemistry, keep the following 3 points in mind:
1.) NCERT is the GodBook. Learn "each and every" word of NCERT for inorganic chemistry. In past few years, IIT's have picked up questions directly from NCERT. Once, an 8 marks matrix match was also picked up directly from NCERT.
2.) Don't leave the inorganic chemistry for the last 2 months. Start preparing for it from the first day itself and seriously "learn" inorganic chemistry for 2 whole years.
3.) Do regular revision. I can bet you that if you don't revise it for about 15 days, then you are sure to forget a large part of it.

Besides NCERT, if you have some time left in your hand, then you can (infact you must) go for JD Lee. It's one of the best books for inorganic chemistry and helps you do develop concepts of inorganic chemistry.
WARNING: Refer to IIT-JEE syllabus if you are deciding to pick up JD Lee. It contains a lot of stuff that is of no use for IIT-JEE.

  1. do u think all questions in chemistry ncert are important?

  2. Bhaiya,
For inorganic, I've completed ncert thoroughly many times. Will that suffice for jee? Actually,we're not being taught inorganic in our classes, so really I've no clue how to prepare for it, so I did ncert many times, and jd lee of two chapters: metallurgy and coordination. I would be really grateful if you could reply at the earliest. I'm preparing for jee 2014.
Also, what should be done in december? I'm really scared with this whole december vibe, so I don't want to ruin things at this stage..:P I'm giving a few test series, and doing the old questions I did during the two years, and new questions... If you have time, can you describe what used to be your strategy during these months?
I'm sorry for writing such a long post and bothering you.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Well your strategy for inorganic is perfect.
    Nothing more is needed.
Just make sure that you don't forget the chapters otherwise all your efforts will go in vain.
If your syllabus has been completed then keep revising things now.
Try to find out your weak areas and put extra efforts to overcome your weaknesses.
Analyse the test series papers to find out where you lost marks, in what type of questions you lost marks, how not to d. The same mistake.
    All these point are important.
Pick up some good question bank like that of fiitjee/resonance/akash and complete it thoroughly.
That should help you remember the concepts.
Keep revising the notes that you made in the last 2 years.

    1. Thanks so much! Another thing, Did you practice inorganic questions from anywhere, except for the ncert questions?
Apart from fiitjee, were there any other good test series you gave?
By question bank, do you refer to the packages, or gmp/rank booster, etc.?

      Delete
    2. Yes I practiced inorganic questions from fiitjee material(packages, past year papers and review packages).
no i didn't appear for any other test series.
      question bank means gmp/rank booster

  4. Hi AMAN,

I will be giving jee in 2015 and i have not yet started with inorganic chemistry yet. I just have 3-4 months left for class 12th beginning. Can you suggest me a plan for inorganic chemistry which i should follow now in class 11th and also in class 12th? How did you make your notes for inorganic chemistry?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Just make sure that you are done with class 11th inorganic part before your class 11th ends.
This will also help you in Your school's exams.
In class 12th, start inorganic from day 1
Study say a page a day and revise complete stuff weekly (including class 11th part)
When you have completed ncert along with the book problems, then comes the difficult part.
Each week you should revise entire inorganic from ncert.
While revising, sit with a diary and mention all the points that you seem to have forgotten and the revise this diary daily.
This was my strategy and it helped me a lot
Remember revision is very important for inorganic chemistry. You shouldn't forget what you learnt

    Replies
    1. By 'revise complete stuff weekly' did u mean revise all read inorganic in 1 day every week or in parts divided over 7 days.

  6. Hi AMAN,

Did you join any correspondence course during jee preparation? I only have Fiitjee Packages and i only solve questions from these packages; I don't like the theory part of these packages especially organic chemistry because there are lot many errors in it. CAN YOU COMPARE BETWEEN THE FIITJEE PACKAGES AND THE RESONANCE PACKAGES?
Which institute has the best set of question bank and all india test series FIITJEE/BANSAL/AKASH/RESONANCE?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't opt for any correspondence course.
But I have seen resonance packages. They are good.
But for theory I would.recommend depending on books rather than packages.
For question bank: I have seen only fiitjee and resonance packages + a few bansal coaching sheets.
      Resonance is really good.
Akash success magnet is another good revision package

This year when i prepared for NSEP AND NSEC i did not get proper guidance regarding the way to start prepration, but still i covered a few topics like current electrictiy and a bit of magnetism OF class 12th syllabus. Next Year also i am planning to give the above mentioned exams, CAN YOU GUIDE ME ABOUT THE BOOKS I SHOULD FOLLOW AND THE CHAPTERS WHICH I SHOULD DO? Please also add your personal experience regarding your Olympiad preparation. IS IT NECESSARY TO FINISH 12TH CLASS SYLLABUS BEFORE PREPARING FOR OLYMPIADS?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I didn't prepare for any olympiad explicitly.
I heard that all of my friends are appearing for the exam so I also gave it a shot.
Luckily I(and only I) cleared NSEC from Kanpur and 3 people(including me) cleared NSEP.
Then for NSEP, my teacher made me solve a number of subjective problems (including past year papers), which helped a lot.
Then I appeared for INPhO and INChO and I(again only I) cleared both of them from Kanpur.
Unfortunately I couldn't appear for any of the camps because of some medical reasons

  13. Hi AMAN,

how did you utilize summer breaks during class 12th? Is It appropriate to finish 12th class inorganic during this time along with the ncert books.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Starting inorganic would be a good idea
but you should not finish it so soon because then you are highly likely to forget it soon.
You should look for an optimum time - neither too early, nor too late to complete inorganic chemistry.
this time should depend on the course content as well as your ability to retain the things

      Delete
    2. Hi AMAN,

In reference to your reply above,

Then how can i utilize the summer vacations in such a way that i have enough time to boost my preparation for JEE?
What was your routine of studying during summer vacations? Did you finish a major part of your class12th syllabus?

      Delete
    3. you can utilize you summer break by practicing problems on what you have already covered
say for mechanics - completing irodov would be a good idea(infact i was weak in mechanics and this strategy helped me to gain a nice command over mechanics portion)
same can be done for other subjects also

i,ve just started with inorganic chem last month , i,ve done chemical bonding from ncert and jd lee (some selected topics only) but now i m facing a problem , yesterday i was practicing questions of chemical bonding from rsm but i was not able to answer some of the questions even though I've done theory very well , did u faced any kind of problem like this one ??? And can u guess any reasons for this problem , i did face this problem in periodic classification and was not satisfied with my work even though I've done the theory part well ??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Reason : you won't be able to solve questions of inorganic chemistry until you complete "whole" of it.
What I mean is that you need to have a good grasp of p-block elements in order to solve the related chapters. So , complete the syllabus first and then move on to problems.

    1. start from the chapter on limits and continuity and move on to differentiation and integration keeping in mind that you only need to get a brief idea and not a detailed analysis of the topic.
I am advising you to study a bit of calculus so that you can apply it in physics and maths right from the beginning.

1)Did u use to read the chapter beforehand which was to be taught in your coaching?if yes, then from Ncert or fiitjee package??
2)What order did you use to follow at home for studying chemistry once a chapter was started in your coaching?for eg.if u had read the chapter beforehnd, then did you read the chapter again at home?please specify the order you followed separately for the 3 branches.I made an order but i am not getting the desired results. So if you tell yours then may be it helps me.
    3) a stupid question- did you watch TV during the two years?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1.) Sometimes I did read it (from NCERT) to get an idea of what's going to happen in the class. But that was rare and mostly I sat in class without any preparations from my side.

2.) this one needs a descriptive answer considering the diversity in chemistry.
a->Organic : I used to read LG wade beforehand. I used to go to class after reading LG wade and believe me, I enjoyed organic. Then after the lesson has been taught in class, I used to reread the book. Then solve fiitjee package problems, then I used to (sometimes) give a try to problems given in LG Wade (maybe only a handful of problems just to make sure that topic is done).
b-> Physical : For this, in class 11th, I was dependent on OP Tondon. After the lesson was done in class, I used to read relevant parts of OP Tondon, then solve fiitjee problems and then problems of OP Tondon. Of course, I also solved coaching sheets.
Towards the end of 2011, I bought RC Mukherjee and then I used to solve problems from that book instead of OP tondon.
c-> inorganic : I assume that just like me, you are also not being taught inorganic in coaching (this is what is done in even the best coaching institutes of India). So, just study NCERT that's it.

3.) Well, I was never interested in TV during JEE preparation. Rather, I was involved in computer gaming to a large extent.
As far as I am able to interpret your question, you indirectly mean to ask me - "Did you ever waste time during your JEE preparation ? I seem to be wasting time in watching TV. What should I do ?".
Yes, I wasted a lot of time in class 11th in playing computer games and cricket. But I made sure that I am not wasting that time at the cost of my studies. That time was bonus/extra for me.

I still have a lot to do in p block, specifically, I have done 13th and 14th groups, and rest all are remaining, plus I have also read ncert of these two groups......
But while solving questions of these groups, it happened that there were some reactions which are neither given in ncert not in my class(Pace), so, what should I do about that???
