Algebra , the most difficult one

For me , algebra was like a nightmare , even today. Thankfully there is no algebra course here in B.Tech. Here is a chapterwise analysis of algebra as most people demanded. I am sorry for the delay.

Complex numbers : as the name suggests , it's a really complex chapter. Contains a large number of concepts. This chapter integrated with coordinate geometry serves as the source of a large number of questions. Be careful with this. Locus problems are asked from this chapter wherein the definitions are given in complex number notation and you are expected to decipher it. The triangle inequality is another important aspect.

Quadratic Equations : A rather simple chapter but very much interesting. Make sure you know all the concepts. This would be easy if you practice past years problems well.

Progressions and series : The so called Vn method is most important. Recursion problems are the favourite ones. Make sure you know the definitions well and are well equipped to apply them whenever needed.

Logarithms : Simplest one. But the base change formula is important. Direct questions are asked rarely but they can test you in say a different way but integrating this chapter with other chapters of algebra.

Permutations and Combinations : The most difficult chapter for me. I am still confused so I can't really say anything but make sure that you solve a large number of problems.

Binomial Theorem : Easy one. Practice a handful of problems and you are done.

Matrices : Simplest chapter of algebra. But the paper setters know how to make you sweat in matrices problems. Check the paragraph that was asked in JEE 2010. It is the toughest problem from this chapter.

Probability : Not really difficult but not easy too. Practice board level problems in the beginning and then move on to tougher ones.

Algebra is an important and a diverse topic with a large weightage so make sure you practice it well.

    1. Well , you seem to be in a big fix. I don't think I can be of much help. But this is what I would suggest :
      Maths : Complete TMH sincerely
Physics : Complete DC pandey sincerely
Chemistry : Complete NCERT sincerely and thoroughly.
The closing ranks for CS :
      IITB - 59
      IITD - 109
      IITK - 307
      IITM - 212
For other IITs , you can look here : jeeadv.iitb.ac.in and the on the left column , click "Data of earlier JEE" > Opening and closing ranks. You'll get a list. Here , CS is the course that ends with 4110. Eg. : IITB CS is B4110.
Since closing rank are so low (in magnitude) , you'll have to prepare hard with enough motivation. Don't sacrifice boards (at least the Physics , Chemistry and maths part) because they allow you to cover NCERT thoroughly. Also one last word - "Believe in quality study and not quantity (of) study"

Thank you for the suggestions.just a little query -

some practice for chemistry apart from jee previous year archives after doing a chapter from ncert

Math theory n illustrations for jee i chose vmc modules.n final tmh revision.

How to effectively use test series..fiitjee aits is really a big no...at least at this stage.so are things like gmp .

      Delete
    5. what exactly is your question ?

      Delete
    6. -->q1)jee chemistry practice resources apart from ncert and jee archives???

please suggest that would be actually CLOSELY INTERLINKED WITH CURRENT JEE ADVANCED STANDARD so that i don't waste time in anything unnecessary at this crucial stage???

-->q2)regarding math--just confirming vmc modules alongwith tmh is sufficient for a ;thorough exposure to required number of problem for a <300 type of rank?

physics u suggested dc pandey full series which is pretty comprehensive..so i guess exposure ok!

these resources i have asked so that if i dont get confidence in a topic ,,then i'll refer to these ,,else would stay at the things u said are the "basic requirement"

q3)how to take out the best of test series at this stage,,i.e. so close to the examination with a large number of chapters yet to be finalized??fiitjee aits are pretty irrelevant w.r.t. to the current jee standard

--A BIG THANKS for being a mentor

  4. Hey Aman
I've started with algebra though im very weak at it so I've made a strategy
    for a topic xyz
first ill cover it through ncert
    second rd Sharma objective
third mcq mathematics from das Gupta
    fourth rsm modules
is it sufficent of jee ?? I mean im aming for a single or a two digit rank and i want to be surely be confident on algebra ..... If there is any better resource possible plzz tell , i don't for coaching so i have lot of time to invest in algebra say 1-1.5 hours though im studying geometry parallel to it if there is any better and smarter way to learn algebra that u think would help

    2) i am good at physical chem but not at all in organic and inorganic
    3) i am mediocer in algebra and calculus but poor in co-ordinate.

i get arount 1200 AIR in fiitjee AITS, so keeping in mind these points please please guide me so that i get AIR of <3000 in jee.

  17. I just want to know 3 thing from you
    1. what was your revision strategy (means whether in revision u did old question which u did in past 2 years again or u whole did new questions)
    2. did u complete the whole fiitjee booklet or used other books for your preparation
    3. how will you rate fiitjee classroom packages of only chemistry and mathematics ------ easy moderate or tough and why
Actually i used other books for these past 2 years of preparation and i planned to complete the whole fiitjee packages during my revision. Now i find that in fiitjee booklets all question are of different varieties which was difficult for me to find in other books which i was using n these past 2 years. Had i used fiitjee booklets earlier i could have done good in both AITS and phase tests. So this is the problem for me

    ReplyDelete
  18. What sort of rank did you use to get in fiitjee AITS (just curious) ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Im planning to write JEE 2015, my class 11 is almost over and most of my physics concepts are at a level b/w Mains & ADV level. I complete few exercises from HCV. Im also weak in some maths topics like vectors, 3D etc. Im strong in organic & I haven't started inorganic at JEE level. I know only the basics of physical chemistry, will I be able to get below 60 rank in JEE 2015 if I study really sincerely after 11th boards?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Also, im getting discouraged due to college internal tests, many students are getting really high marks like around 315/360 whereas im getting only 180/360. Did this every happen to you? If so please elaborate and tell me what you did to stay motivated. (Im thinking those students already had a foundation IIT course, but will they fare at the same speed in 12th class, because it is in more depth?)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. See, 180/360 is not a good score (you must accept is as soon as you can).
But the good point is that it can be improved. Your friends have lesser scope of improvement because their scores are almost saturated but you have lots of chances of improvement. Work hard, and you'll get to that level. Take class12th seriously in case you feel that you didn't give your 100% in class 11th.

  21. i've covered the entire algebra except complex numbers.... it seems impossible to do... (i know there are about 4-5 questions every year) but i want to know... if i do this topic jee mains level, is it okay....

and yes., is this an independent chp. or has use in calculus or others/...(except coordinate)..
it has no use in physics right??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a tough chapter but unfortunately it's important for JEE advanced.
For JEE advanced, you will have to prepare it well.
This chapter has great applications (coordinate as you mentioned).
Besides, you will be using basics of this chapter in Alternating current (Physics) - Yes, that's the beauty of mathematics

  22. Hey Aman now it's high time for our preparation so I need your suggestion regarding the following
    1. In case of TMH which should be preferred more the initial solved problems or the level 1 problems or the 2 level problems
    2. In case of RC Mukherjee the first initial 60 - 70 solved problems or the unsolved problems given in the end of every chapter or the miscellaneous unsolved problems given right at the back of the book
    3. In case of physics arihant, the subjective problems at the end of each chapter or the objective problems of level 1 or level 2

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In case 1 and 2, the solved problems are better than the unsolved ones.
In case 3, I really can't say anything. You should solve a balanced combination of both

If you are feeling low because of complex numbers, then it's absolutely OKAY.
It happens with everyone. It's a tough chapter and you won't be able to do anything about it.
My suggestion : Do whatever you can and leave the rest. Come back to this chapter towards the end of your preparation. I can bet that you would be able to do it then because you would have gained a lot of practice and experience by then

But now i am able to crack 60-70% of TMH just after reading questions !
Can you suggest me some concept building books for mathematics (as you mentioned earlier that Hall and knight is not relevant for jee !
