Ideas for efficient revision sessions

I received tonnes of requests on "How to revise ?"
Here are a few methods that are based on my own experience. Note that my strategy might completely fail for you. So it's best to discover one's own techniques when it comes to revision, which is a crucial stage in JEE preparation.
First of all, I will write about Chemistry because this is something that needs infinite revision.

Inorganic chemistry : As I have been emphasizing from the beginning, inorganic chemistry requires a lot of revision. I had my own strategy. I used to :

1.)read from books (NCERT/JD Lee/FIITJEE packages etc)
2.)fix in my mind as much as I could in one shot
3.)maintain a diary wherein I used to mention all those facts which I didn't remember/used to forget easily
4.)revised that diary daily during the last couple of months
5.)revised the stuff of point number 2 (above) on weekends

This way, I ensured that I did not forget the things that have been covered so far.

Note : although I have mentioned JD Lee here. You can simply ignore it
Summary : re-read NCERT

Organic chemistry : towards the end of my preparation, I made a full reading of Morrison and Boyd to ensure that nothing is left from HC Verma of chemistry (Morrison Boyd is regarded as HC Verma of chemistry). I solved numerous problems to ensure that I am ready to apply the reactions on the final day.

Another important thing was that I revised all the "Key mechanisms" of LG Wade. They are the most important mechanisms and a table is given in the book that lists all the page numbers of the Key mechanisms. That table is meant for quick revision.
Summary : solve problems

Physical Chemistry : I solved the problems of RC Mukherjee (note that there are objective problems at the end of book). I regularly revised the chapter - Colloidal state

Summary : solve problems

Maths : for maths, I revised algebra from TMH. Co-ordinate geometry, Trigonometry from FIITJEE packages, Calculus from Arihant Differential and integral calculus (best pair of books for calculus) and Vectors/3-D geometry from ML Agarwal (ISC board Maths book)

Summary : solve problems

Physics : In physics, I was proficient in numericals but the thing that bowled me were the theory based questions that are frequently asked in more than one correct type problems. So I revised HC Verma fully (meaning the theory portion) and solved the objective I and II and discussed it with my teachers.

Summary : solve problems

Note that most of the summaries contain the tag - "solve problems".

Reasons :
1.)you are applying the formulas so you are forced to recall them (this is what you'll be doing on D-day)
2.)you are practicing more and more questions
3.)your speed is increasing
4.)your accuracy is increasing
5.)your examination temperament is improving

Last piece of advice :

1.)Do not waste time after JEE main. Utilize this fully for you revision. This time is going to decide your rank. The one who wastes this time is going to be ruined on the JEE day
2.)If you JEE main doesn't go fine, don't be depressed
3.)Revise all the subjects daily - one subject per day is dangerous
4.)Keep pen and paper with you (for solving problems and not as a show piece)
5.)Practice as many problems as possible
6.)last and final one - don't be over confident. There are super stud people in every fields that are way ahead of you

All the best.

  4. Hey aman..pls suggest me on my revision plan that i will follow after October 2014..

Physics-Revise theory entirely from HCV including Objective I and II (presently i do theory from resnick halliday) and questions all from dc pandey and those in which i had doubts(including package, archive and irodov)

Chemistry- Revise the summary notes and lots of questions from anywhere I can..except revising thoroughly from NCERT for both questions and theory..

Maths- Solve the entire TMH while again practicing the questions I had doubt in (including Archive, Package, and other topic wise books u suggested as i solve them parallel while the topic is taught in the class)

I plan to do all dis in a 3 month period when we have an off for coatings as well as schools..

    So..hows dat??

      Forget about revision
I know it's good to have a plan in mind
But october is just too far.
it's better to think about revision during september.

    1. Ofcourse, you have plenty of time.
Lets do a bit of mathematics.
Let us assume that board exams last for a month and January is already over.
Then for JEE advanced, you have February + March + April + May - 1(for board exams) = 3 months in hand.
      Now 3 months = 90 days = 90 * 24 hours = 2160 hours.
Now assuming you can study for only 12 hours a day, you have 2160/2 = 1080 hours out of which, assume that 4 hours a day is mathematics so you have 360 hours of Maths time.
Let's assume that 60 hours go waste anyhow, still you have 300 hours for Maths.
Now assume that you take 5 minutes to solve a problem (which should ideally be less than 3 minutes), then you can solve 300 * 12 = 3600 problems!!!!!
      Well that's a huge number.
I hope you got what I mean.

    2. hey thanks for the numbers....its really instilled a new zeal in me and ill be pushing towards my goal with every drop of energy i have....thank u so much Aman! May god bless u and u reach the pinnacle of every success....

    and one more question...
The only test series in my area is FIITJEE AITS, yet I am not yet aiming for a 2 digit rank, i am aiming for a 3 digit rank. What is the best way to make use of AITS?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The carbocation can rearrange itself to form another more stable carbocation. Such reactions are called "Rearrangement Reactions of Alkyl Carbocations."
They form an important class of reactions and you are expected to know when and how does a carbocation rearrange.
In LG Wade there are examples of carbocation rearrangement.
      Go through them.

For FIITJEE AITS : no comments

You'll be applying topics of class 11th to solve problems of topics of class 12th. This way, your concepts will become stronger

But still : It's not like "I will do topics of class 11th in class 12th". You aren't supposed to do that.
What I mean is that if you feel that you have a feeling of topic and a good idea then it's fine. To develop a cent percent confidence, wait a bit

    1. Consider Work energy and power chapter in physics.
Suppose you are not getting that "I know this chapter perfectly" feeling.
Then wait. In class 12th, you will be learning electrostatics, magnetism, modern physics, thermodynamics. In all these chapter, you will be solving numerous problems that will require application of say : conservation of mechanical energy, work energy theorem.
A better example. After learning this chapter(work energy power), I am pretty sure that you must be not confident in what exactly potential energy is ? Am I right ?
You must be told that Coulombic force is conservative and has an associated potential function.
But, you will be learning about this in great detail in electrostatics (Even I am learning all this in my second semester).
So after studying electrostatics, you will see that your perception of potential energy will change. You will get a real feel of the topic.

      Yet another example.
You have learnt binomial theorem, progression series etc etc chapters of algebra in class 11th.
Now I guess you will feel that binomial theorem is "SO" easy. It has only a limited number of problems.
No , that's not the case.
There are mind blowing questions of integration that will require use of binomial theorem and they are mind blowing only because of that hidden "binomial theorem" in "integration"

    2. And also in schrodinger equation,V stands for potential energy of electron. What does it signify? Is it important?

    3. Leave it (completely)
I have completed a full 6 credit course here on quantum mechanics which involved solving shrodinger equation million times but still I couldn't understand the head or tail of it.
Leave it completely as I said. No one's gonna ask you in JEE (after all it's our professors who set JEE papers)

  29. I used to make personalized notes in all the subjects during class 11th and 12th.
It's the best habit because writing yourself fixes things in your mind better than just seeing the things.
It's really really effective. 50% task is done if you write it yourself. Then, I used to go home and again try out myself the derivations and questions given in class to ensure that I have understood it well.
Of course, this habit is recommended.
I would like you all to purchase/see the book by Arpit Agarwal (JEE 2012 AIR 1). He has written an awesome book on how he and some of his friends prepared for JEE and ended up with excellent ranks in JEE. He has described how to make good notes and given snapshots of some of his notes too (qualitative analysis). That will give you a good idea.
