Test Series

Those who are appearing for JEE 2016 should join a test series by now. There are a number of test series - FIITJEE, Resonance, Narayana, etc. Since I was enrolled in FIITJEE, I joined FIITJEE All India Test Series. FIITJEE test series is extremely hard - way above JEE level and at times it is demotivating. So, I would not recommend FIITJEE test series. I have seen a couple of Resonance test series papers and they seemed to be more relevant to me. Also, I have heard good reviews of Resonance test series from my peers as well. So, I would recommend you to join Resonance test series. For those who are aiming for a high rank may however choose to opt for FIITJEE because almost all top (50) rankers join FIITJEE AITS and so, appearing for FIITJEE AITS will help you evaluate your national standing better.

Quite a large number of you ask me - how much should I score in test series to get a top X rank in JEE?
Well, this question has no answer. Score depends on the toughness of paper.

Then what is a good score to check?
Your percentile!

What used to be my score?
I consistently had 2 scores - 99.9 percentile and 99.8 percentile in FIITJEE AITS

What used to be my ranks?
My ranks in FIITJEE AITS varied from 2nd rank (once) to ~40. I even got 59th rank once after messing up a full test. Since I finally ended up with JEE AIR 33, I strongly feel that FIITJEE AITS gives you a good approximation of your real standing. Note that this applies only at the top ~100 rank level. After that, your rank in FIITJEE AITS will have significant error in approximating your actual JEE rank.

A strategy that I liked about FIITJEE was the way they took part tests. Before starting the actual test series, FIITJEE divided JEE syllabus into 3 parts. Then they held 3 part tests from each part. There was a gap of 2 weeks between 2 part tests. These part tests greatly helped me to completely revise the JEE syllabus in about a month. Moreover, I was able to learn a lot during these part tests. I realized that there are certain concepts at which I need a better command and so, I solved more problems from those concepts and discussed them with my teachers. I believe that it was this 1 month of preparation that really took me from a top 100 rank to a top 50 rank in JEE.

Regarding test series, I would like to give an important summary that should answer your questions.
I would personally recommend FIITJEE to all those who have been performing well so far and who are really aiming for a top 100 rank in JEE. FIITJEE test series is highly recommended for those who love challenging problems beyond JEE syllabus and those who are willing to learn new concepts at this juncture.
However, if you feel you have some backlogs, or you are not that good, or you feel you won't be able to get a top 100 rank, then please do not join FIITJEE test series. It will be highly demotivating for you. FIITJEE test series is really meant for those who have done proper 2 years of JEE preparation with zero backlogs and a good understanding of all the topics (that's how you define a top 100 ranker). Note that there are exceptions and please do not misinterpret my statements. All I mean to say is that FIITJEE test series is not meant for you if you have some *hole* in your preparation. I joined FIITJEE because I was very sure about my performance. I had been performing well consistently in class 11th and 12th in the FIITJEE phase tests and that's why my teacher asked me to join FIITJEE AITS. Also, it was a part of my FIITJEE fee payment and so, I did not bother to look at some other test series.

All the best

  1. In 2015, 33 students were in top 100 from FIITJEE(All programs), so if you are consistently getting top 30 rank in FIITJEE AITS that means, you will be in top 100 (until u don't mess up things on the D-Day!!). 12 students were in top 50, that means if you are consistently getting top 10 rank, that means u can be in top 50. Simple. Watch your rank not the marks you get.....

    1. Online test series are more of a nuisance than help; I joined Reso online and Pace online AITS, and really, that was a bad experience. Most of these AITS have mistakes in their final answers, solutions and whatnots, which ultimately decreases your score and morale. Go for it if you have no other option is what I'd suggest.

    2. What about online platforms like Embibe or Toppr??? They also offer test series....

    3. I don't think you should go for these.. personally never gave either of them.. But if you are unable to join postal or live program, go for the renowned AITS, like FIITJEE Reso or Allen etc. instead of those two.

    4. What is your views on Aakash AIATS???

    5. Again I will reiterate: In my opinion stick to established AITS of Kota like Reso(probably the best AITS) or go with one from south (Narayana etc). I have myself seen papers of AIATS, and I found them somewhat lacking the cracking questions the aforementioned AITS will give you.

  3. I am enrolled in fiitjee south Delhi and I have got rank of 750 in part test 1 advanced .but I actually feel that i can do much better if I control my silly mistakes bubbling error etc. So should I leave fiitjee test series or continue with it.
I would mention that there are some branches over which I am not confident .these are calculus
Physical chem class 12 and in physics I have only some topics left
In the remaining portion like organic inorganic etc I have a upper hand and can do all most everything.

    1. If FIITJEE test series helps you to evaluate your performance at a national level with other competitors with whom you will be competing in JEE, and also, if it is helping you to find out your weak areas, why leave it?

    3. For 11th, I guess you'll have AIiTS Mudit. Go ahead and give them. They're way more 'normal' than the AITS, which will come later on.
In class 11, revision should just mean revisiting some topics or following a question bank. If all's done, ask your faculty for help

Revision books for class 11 make sense only after a year for you chap!

      cheers

  6. I am in class 12 and I enrolled in fiitjee test series. I didn't do well in the first test of fiitjee aits (Rank of around 2000 in part test 1 advanced) but I am motivated to do better. As I am a school going student fiitjee test series takes up a lot of time. Should I continue to give it? I have always been among the top 5 ranks in my coaching centre and feel that with more test practice I can improve a lot. Or should I stop giving it and focus on my institutes test series? ( I go to VMC Gurgaon)

    1. If you feel confident, go ahead and give atleast a couple more tests from the FIITJEE AITS. I, personally, attended FIITJEE and I understand the first could have been a setback. If you think you can do better, go ahead.

But remember don't push yourself too hard, ie, don't let your ego get in the way and ruin it for you. Also, what Aman meant should not be mistaken for 'If you can't cope with the AITS, you cannot finish in the top 100'. It's just an idea. the AITS do test the concepts to the very core and involve multiple concepts and application (esp. Math).
So choose wisely and don't worry. 100 is just a number. Try to give your best.

      cheers

  7. Aman I am class 11th student in VMC and was till now able to get rank 50s in the review tests but now in my latest test I performed so poorly that my rank was 2000 I am really shocked. I found that my major faults are occurring in thermodynamics and other physical chemical chap.
PLS now a days I am unable to do even 10 questions in hour .please help

    1. Relax, you have plenty of time. If you know where your major faults are occurring, study those chapters well!
Also, you will face a lot of ups and downs. AIR 50 one day and AIR 2000 in another day might be an abnormal leap, but still, this isn't something new in JEE preparation! Such things do happen.
Practice more problems from the above chapters and you will be back in fight again :)

  8. Aman, I am JEE 2016 aspirant. I have enrolled in fiitjee aits but my syllabus is still not complete. I plan to finish it up by dec end. Now I am confused whether to appear the aits test for now or skip them until the full tests in january??? Please help.

    1. Read the article buddy; FIITJEE WILL be demotivating for those with even the slightest of backlogs. And since you plan to tie up your syllabus by december, obviously you won't be able to attempt the part tests first time around, and I guess your full tests properly either. Appearing for FIITJEE full papers would (in my opinion) require at least a bit of revision. See how much you are able to revise before the full papers. According to me, revision should take priority over full papers. If you feel you are confident enough to attempt full papers, by all means go for them.
