For Droppers

Hi people! Shobhna here. And here goes the article for droppers which I promised.
I'll tell this straight from the beginning for all those who have taken a drop. DON'T let go in the middle. Hold on till the end. There were plenty of people who gave up in the middle, and got ranks worse than the previous year.
Well, droppers have a few advantages over the others:
1. No Boards, so you have the whole of March to study.
2. You have given JEE once, you have more experience of the environment, the stress. Try to curb the stress.
(These were meant for motivating droppers, 12thies also have loads of advantages over droppers, so don't make an issue out of this, 12thies :P)

Now a little bit about the preparation:
Your course should ideally get over by January/early February so that you have enough time to practise. By course getting over, I mean becoming confident enough in ALL the chapters. After your course gets over, try giving a test every single day, preferably in the exam timings. Do revision packages along with giving tests. Revise every chapter periodically, so that it remains in your mind, as if you've just done it. Never get out of touch with a chapter. Ideally, I would recommend revising Inorganic daily. I used to revise Inorganic by picking up a chapter, writing down whatever comes in my mind about that topic, and later tallying it with my notes to see what I had left. (This helps people with weak memories like me.)

Some logistics now:
It's really very easy to get demotivated during the drop year. Stay away from demotivators.
The same people telling you repeatedly that taking a drop is a huge risk, will come and tell you that you made a wise decision after you clear JEE with flying colours!
Have something that motivates you even when you feel you're in the biggest trench of your life. Keep in touch with your parents, and with the teachers and friends who motivate you the most. Coz JEE is not just about PCM, it's also about how well you are able to handle your emotions and stress!
Your last year's rank doesn't matter, what matters is your performance this year! Nobody is going to ask you why you dropped a year in the long run! In fact, people at iits are so chill, they don't give a damn to whether you have dropped a year after 12th or not!

So, work hard, stay motivated! See you all at the iits next year! :D

    1. Thanks!
I made a lot of mistakes during +2, that's why I had to take a drop! Do you want to know the mistakes?
Well, I wasted a lot of time in going to school. So, not enough time for preparation. The BIGGEST mistake.
Another mistake: Didn't study chemistry very well.
No, sometimes I could not understand a concept very well, got it cleared either from teachers after class, or from friends. I didn't practise much: another BIG mistake!
If you want a set of books I would finally recommend, that would be different from what I myself did in +2. So, decide what exactly you want!

    1. Not being able to solve a problem in class doesn't matter. If you are not able to solve a problem, go home and solve more problems, taking that as an inspiration. Make that your driving force, believe in yourself, and keep practising. What ultimately matters is how much you score in the exam, not how much you answer in class!

  6. hi di....when u started with revision package(if any) and how many test in a week u gave after ur course completion? and how much u scored in the test?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Start with revision packages as early as possible.
At least one test should be given daily, two would be optimum.
In easy papers, score varied from 60 to 80-90%, in tough papers, it was in the ange of 30-40%, as far as I remember.

      Delete
    2. Before I start - Thanks for such an helpful post!

Now, coming to the important part:-

Please clarify (for) me whether- "...In easy papers, score varied from 60 to 80-90%, in tough papers, it was in the ange of 30-40%..."

Q.1) That data is somewhere when you started (mid Jan 15), right?

Q.2) What exactly, should my goal be (after following your advice), of giving 1-2 papers daily? Exam temperament, maybe? But isn't that a bit too much? Plus 2 papers (6 hours) would imply I would hardly be able to do anything else on that day, taking 7 hours for paper itself (an hour break in mid), 2 hours to search all the answers and analysing both the papers, We can assume that I invest 9-10 hours daily in this exercise, I just want to make sure that they are well invested.

      Delete
    3. You're welcome!
      1. It was after course completion.
      2. You won't be able to do much on the day you do 2 papers, that's true, but with the leftover time on that day, you could revise some inorganic. Hence, two papers should be attempted only when you have a day entirely free.
Else, attempt one paper daily at least. That'll be done in 4 hours, and you have rest of the time for revision!

  7. There should be a post on 'Mentality'. Aman should write that. There hasn't been any post on this, which is such a important topic. Hope you understand the importance of the words 'mentality', 'mindset', 'state of mind' during one's preparation for IIT-JEE. Most of the students don't have right mindset, hence they fail.

    2. I had a score of 243 in main 2015 but only 194 in adv, also a lot of guys from my coaching who scored between 245 to 255 in main scored 285+ in adv (one of them actually had 252and295 just like yours). Why do you think that happened(243->194), what could i have done wrong?

      Delete
    3. Your mistake was that you didn't learn from the mistakes that you made in JEE Main.
I remember committing 2 silly mistakes in JEE Main -
1.) reading plano convex as biconvex and losing 5 marks
2.) confusing between total energy and energy given out in a thermodynamics problem

I thoroughly fixed those mistakes in my mind and guess what? My friend committed similar mistakes in JEE advanced, while I managed to get those problems correct

It is very important to learn from your mistakes.

  19. Which coaching should I join while living here in Delhi. I know it's a stupid question but Please reply responsibly :-p . I am going to drop for JEE Advanced 2017 as I know I have not done enough preparations for JEE Advanced 2016 because of boards and will try everything I could to be in IIT Delhi for sure in 2017 :-) .

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. None of us are from Delhi or have a related background, but what I strongly suggest is you not give up and try hard. If you have been fine with your 11-12 curriculum, there's still a lot of hope. JEEM should nt be a great issue of concern, and since you're so keen on IIT, you can directly focus on Advanced.
ALso, I'd suggest you not stay so emotionally attached to joining a particular location(reference to Delhi) so early on. It might lead to a branch compromise, which (believe me when I say it) would be far worse. Stay liberal and rather focus on your interests. Try hard and you might make it! It's worthless planning to drop a year even before attempting the current paper. Note that everything Shobhna mentioned was including the fact that you have experienced the exam once and have mistakes to rectify.

      Cheers mate!

    1. Yes, I did. From a local coaching Institute.
      It does benefit:
      1. Helps keep up the momentum, which is very essential in the drop year, as droppers can get demotivated easily.
      2. It helps maintain the pace of your studies.
      3. You get to learn new stuff, which you hadn't learnt earlier.

    2. Thanks for reply:).if u did go to coaching than how did u get the time to COMPLETE(emphasis on complete),all d books that aman mentioned here like arihant maths series, iridov,lg wade,op tandon physical chem+ur coaching packages?

      Delete
    3. Also as mentioned above this will be my strategy in drop year.
Coaching or not coaching is still not decided.
      1)Maths-completing arihant mathematics series(5 books)+arihant previous years papers+coaching modules(narayana?)
      2)chem-lg wade(organic)+op tandon (physical)+ncert (inorganic)+arihant previous years papers+coaching modules(if possible)
      3)physics-hc verma+arihant series by dc pandey+iridov+arihaant previous years papers+coaching material(if possible)
4)joining test series by reputed institute while (or after) completing(emphasis on completing) the said books.
So how does it look??mention any flaws u notice. I'm counting on u guys(iitian authors and other members, users of the blog)
Ps considering the above plan is it still necessary to go to coaching??)

      Delete
    4. Well, coaching or no coaching entirely depends on you.
My point is- It's very easy to get demotivated during the drop year, and a coaching gives the little 'pushes' that are sometimes required.
But, you know yourself best. So, it's entirely upto you to decide.

    1. Coaching material is generally a superset of all good books :p you can go for either.. You'll save time by going for coaching modules. Books are an equally good option though as you will get even those questions which coaching people don't deem helpful, but which are actually pretty awesome.

  47. Hi didi, Thank you very much for this wonderful post. It is very very helpful.
I am dropping a year for JEE 2017. In 2016 I got a rank of 14k. And nearly 50-55% of the marks came from Physics.
I did not take any coaching in classes 11-12.
I am from Kolkata. And the main coaching institutes present here are FIITJEE, Aakash and a local one. But FIITJEE Kolkata has got very poor reviews. People say Aakash is the best in Kolkata. So, I took admission here.
But here 95% of the students did not even crack JEE Mains. Only one student apart from me, cracked JEE Advanced. That too with a rank much behind that of mine...
They get doubts in even the the very basic level simple problems.
The Physics teacher has started from scratch... right from distance-displacement, average and instantaneous velocity etc. So is the case with Chemistry. They make us write stupid notes which are very basic kind of stuff. The classes are hence pretty boring. This may not actually be the teachers' fault though. When I spoke to the Physics teacher, the other day, his reply was that he has to cater to the needs of all the students and hence the pace and manner of teaching.
The students are very determined, apparently. But as of now, it is a very drab and noncompetitive atmosphere. And I am getting a feel that I don't belong to here. The classes are, to me, utter waste of time...
FIITJEE Kolkata, I hear, is still more pathetic.
I have made a self routine of my own. This course has a lot of tests which is good. Apart from that, everything is very depressing. The risk that I am taking, coupled with all these, makes me kind of sad, at times.
The classroom extends for 5 hours, by the way, for 5 days a week. And the maths class is slow-paced, but is kind of good.
I am determined, I'll get a very good rank next year. I have made a self routine of my own. Please suggest how I should move ahead. Should I attend classes regularly? What, according to you, should be the exact strategy?

  53. Hello di, Some queries,
Are the revision packages enough to cover up all the minute details, during last few months of prep..
I am an average student , dropping for this year, and I found it very much difficult to review everything for 2016...
This year's paper had few topics which were not covered well in the revision packages, due to which I had to suffer...
So if u could come with any idea to deal with this...
And, lastly thanks for bearing for such a long post...

  55. Hi ! I passed out +2 in 2015 . But wasn't serious for JEE . Then , I decided to take a drop but in the last few months I got demotivated and screwed my JEE main . I want to give it a try again . Since , this is my last time and I am not eligible for JEE advanced , I want to perform good in main so that I could get admssion in IIIT Hyderabad or Allahabad . I go to college from 8 to 4 . How do I prepare for JEE main as to get a rank below 500 at home wihout any DLP or coaching classes ?

  59. Hi everyone I am a 12th standard student from delhi.
I battled deppression and anxiety disorder in 11th and am now successfully out of it, although the fear of a relapse does exist.
Since it is too late for me to realistically expect an under 100 score in JEE ADV. 2017, I have been mentally preparing myself to take the drop.
I know for sure that I want my life back on track and even though my parents are forcing me to write the Jee this year and I may not do well, I will be superbly motivated for my next attempt.
Given here is the list of books I plan to use for my preparation.
Although they may not seem like a lot I plan to study and solve each question in those books atleast 4 times with max. thoroughness. Please suggest some addnl. books which would help :
    MATHS :
rd sharma of 11th and both of 12th
    TMH
Modules of Vidyamandir/FIITJEE/Resonance/Narayana : Please suggest the best
    CHEM :
    NCERT 11TH AND 12TH
    Modules of FIITJEE AND VMC
    PHYSICS :
    hc verma all parts
    CENGAGE

  60. Shobha di...I really really really need someone's help. I am a dropper. I got 91 (I know that's pathetic) last year in mains. I know my preparation was enough for 200 marks at least but I got nervous and completely blank during the paper. I attempted only 30 questions. Now as jee mains is approaching I am getting nervous again that I'd get blank and ruin the paper again! Please help!

  70. I have screwed up my jee main this year 2018.On entering the examination hall I got a lot more tensed and couldn't even imagine to myself how I screwed up the examination where in the mock tests I used to score an average of 240-280/360.But now I am getting nearly a score of 47/360 which is not sufficient to get even qualified for jee advanced.Should I drop this year and prepare seriously for jee 2019 or just leave it.Anyone please guide me.Now I am totally confused.

    1. I'd say that if it is indeed the case that you were doing quite well in your coaching, but due to exam pressure, your performance went down, then you should definitely consider taking a drop. 47/360 is definitely not going to land you anywhere.
