The final stretch

Hi guys, Karan here. Hope you fared well in your JEE-Main. I realize that it's been quite a long time since our last article. But it's been very busy for us here this semester.
Some of you were asking for a post to discuss your preps in this period between JEE Main and Advanced. So here goes:
This is the final stretch of your preparation guys. This is a period where you can make up quite a lot of ground. You can also LOSE out on quite a lot of ground.
So, Rule #1 of survival: Don't let things get to your head. I mean it both ways. Don't be overconfident, but have faith in your ability. Also, don't get depressed because you did not do well in this paper or that one. Let your confidence be unshakeable for a bit, in a positive sense. Do not lose confidence is yourself; This is the biggest thing to ensure while passing through this period.
Now, onto things you should and should not do. This is fairly straightforward. Avoid using new books; Stick with the ones you have already covered. This will help avoid duplication of efforts, as most books have about 80% problems common. This also applies for the theory. So better to not experiment with new books in this period. Also, make sure you give A LOT of papers. It is imperative to practice good, Advanced level question papers in this period. Also, they should be attempted properly; As in, you should do both paper 1 and paper 2 for the full 3 hours, with a less than 2 hour break in the middle. Let paper practice become the source of new questions for you, instead of books. This way, you'll leaarn to handle surprises and tough questions thrown at you in the paper. Also, 6 hours of paper-solving can be taxing, so make sure you have your stamina with you till the final bell. This stamina can be developed only through paper-practice.
There's also the issue of exam nervousness. As hard as you might prepare, there will always be those butterflies in your stomach. No one is exempt from this. But you can minimise the impact of this nervousness by giving papers. The pseudo-exam atmosphere, with thousands of kids writing the paper with you- that cannot quite be recreated in a test. However, it is the best you could possibly do.
Go for some good, reputed All India Test Series. Only solving papers also won't suffice; It's more important to properly analyse each and every paper. You have to learn from your mistakes, and not repeat them in the actual paper. Evaluate your scores on the same day; Sit with the paper, and think where you are lacking. This is the way to root out the final flaws in your preparation.
There's one more important skill to be learnt during this period: The skill of sorting. You must be thorough enough with your weaknesses and strengths that you can immediately sort questions in the paper, and attempt your strengths first. This is not an innate thing, but has to be honed like every skill. Without this, JEE Advanced is a HUGE obstacle.
Also, some more do's and dont's:
KEEP REVISING INORGANIC CHEMISTRY THOROUGHLY. Students do not pay heed to inorganic chemistry much during this period. You keep revising it, at least 25% of the chemistry paper will fall into your lap.
GO THROUGH SYNOPSIS OF CHAPTERS. We all tend to forget something or the other from some chapter. It's very important that you keep as much theory as possible in your head. Revising so much during so little time is no mean feat, and it helps greatly if you have synopses of chapters writtem with you.
BE THOROUGH WITH OXIDISING AND REDUCING AGENTS IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. It's not a big surprise that Match-Matrix questions pertaining to this were asked in the past 2-3 years. It is baffling, with so many things to remember. Mug all of it up, is all I can say. It's EXTREMELY IMPORTANT from JEE-Advanced point of view.
That's all this time from my side guys. I understand this hasn't been as technical a post as you would have liked, but we have some serious time crunches at the moment. Feel free to post your doubts in the comments section below, and I'll surely try and answer as many as I can, as that would be simpler.
Study hard! It's the final stretch of an extremely long journey, and you certainly don't want to miss whatever awaits you at it's end, out of sheer exhaustion!
Cheers!

  2. Will Revision Materials be helpful?
If yes then which ones should be practised alongside papers?

    1. Yes, revision materials are helpful. I solved resonance rank booster, and found that to be quite helpful. If you aim for à high enough rank, you can also go for Fiitjee grand masters package.

Please advice the right(sufficient) source for studying inorganic chemistry. Is NCERT enough?

    1. Like I mentioned in the post, do not go for new theory books in this period. If you have covered any other book besides NCERT which supersedes the theory given in NCERT, go for that(books like JD Lee etc). If not, NCERT is okay.

    1. You need to decide for yourself what all has been taught in class that might come in handy, and what the professor has stressed. Most things are based on concepts, which you just need to know rather than learn. But some things like Inorganic and Organic chemistry do require some rattafication.

    1. Physical chemistry- OP Tandon and P Bahadur.
Inorganic chemistry- OP Tandon, JD Lee(Sudarshan Guha version) and NCERT towards the end. You don't need to do ALL of these, though NCERT is a must do. You can choose one from the remaining two if you have time.
Physics- HC Verma and the complete Anurag Mishra series.

    2. For organic, I used Jagdamba Singh's 'A Logical Approach To Modern Organic Chemistry' for theory and MS Chouhan for problems.

  10. In that case it would be better to not read this article and let those read who feel that the article is worth reading :)

On a serious note, I have authorized Karan to write articles on the blog because I feel he IS good enough to write articles on behalf of me. And yes, JEE isn't based on luck, be it a 2 digit rank or a 4 digit rank.

Lastly, if you feel that by getting 2 digit ranks in "INSERT COACHING NAME HERE" and clearing NSEP, NSEC etc makes you a winner, then please, you are wrong. NSEP is a very basic exam, so is NSEC (I left my NSEC exam hall at the 35th minute and I cleared INChO as well). So better not talk about that.

If you feel that the author is "below" your level, you are most welcome to stop reading the blog. We have plenty of authors who enjoy reading articles written by Karan and are already benefiting from them :)

    Cheers!

  15. From where is it advised to cover biomolecules and polymers apart from ncert? Questions have been asked from these topics in JEE that go beyond ncert. I have to cover it up for JEE ADV 2016. Please try to respond soon. Thanks :)
PS: I am a fiitjee student so I have fiitjee material but that is beyond the jee syllabus.

    1. Dearest blog writers, I have absolutely no idea what to do for biomolecules, though I am thorough with ncert, I feel it is not sufficient for JEE Adv point of view, kindly guide me on this. I am sorry if it bothers you in any way it shouldn't.

    2. You could try both from O.P Tandon. Questions generally won't go out of the combined scope of both NCERT and OP Tandon.

  16. Hi Kartikeyea,

My two cents: Humility is what matters the most in life. You need advice from a two-digit ranker, right? At least look at Aman and learn something from him. In spite of being AIR 33, having an excellent cpi, and being one of the stud coders in the institute, he doesn't have a tad of ego.

Get a life, dude. Ego is not gonna take you anywhere.

  18. sir , actually i recently gave the jee main .. and now i m preparing for jee advanced .. but during solving the fiitjee package and resonance rank booster .. sometimes i couldnt solve some problems which demotivates me ...so what could be strategy for mental preparation..please

    1. You NEED to toughen up mentally, friend. Because otherwise JEE will be a shower of hammers that falls upon you time and again. There are only 3 weeks left for JEE Advanced, and I don't think any strategy will help you with mental preparation. Just keep your calm, and go on attempting as many questions as you can. If you feel you're demotivated in the midst of a paper, take a pause for a few moments. Don't attempt questions in a frenzy. Most of all remember this- your brain is in your control. It is up to you to ensure that it does not override your senses.

  20. As a parent of a young IIT aspirant, reading this blog has me impressed at the generosity and expertise of the authors who are driven by the desire to give back to others following in their footsteps... and taking time out of what must be a hectic schedule to motivate, inspire and assist new students trying to ace the JEE Advanced.

But more than the technical aspects of the content, what impressed me most was the humility, decency and professionalism expressed by Mr.Aman, who at such an early phase of his career and with such high credentials to his record (AIR 33 is no sneezing matter!), still has his feet on the ground and doesn't have an air of grandiosity about himself.

That, over and above anything else, gains him my RESPECT.

30 years of high academic achievement, career accomplishment, and international acclaim has brought me in contact with several celebrities who were pioneers, innovators and giants in their fields. The trait they all had in common was a sense of humility and gratitude for their talent, which helped them reach their highest potential. I have also known many wanna-bes who had attitude disproportionate to their capabilities... and they always under-performed in the long run.

Thank you, Mr.Aman Goel, for publishing this blog along with your selfless co-authors. I hope you all continue to retain this special nature that makes you such great successes in life - even before you have done the great things in your field of expertise, as I'm in no doubt you WILL very soon. My blessings and wishes for your continued success... and thank you for helping people like my child through the rigours of IIT entrance test preparations.

  23. hey
I'm not able to find the right strategy to attempt my paper. i have tried two things basically :-
    1. Attempting only those questions of which I'm 100% sure of, to maintain high accuracy
    2. First attempting sure shot questions, then going for other questions using option analysis, guesswork and vague attempts when i'm not able to recall the concept

but as there is now 50%(maybe even more) negative marking, even a decent accuracy of 80% in approach 1. doesnt get me a high score.

can you suggest some strategies i could use in the paper to increase my score?

    3. also, what all should i check for during paper analysis and how can i eradicate those errors?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A mixture of 1 and 2 is the best strategy you could follow. Even in the questions you know you can solve for sure, look up those which will take the least amount of time, then ones which involve easy concepts but slight calculations and then go for the ones which you know you CAN solve, but which will be time-taking because of a difficult concept, or maybe lengthy calculations. Only after that go for the tougher questions. Once you are done with the questions you are sure with, with time on your side, you can go for some of the tougher questions as well. But don't attempt a question if you feel there is doubt between at least 3 of the options, as negative marking will bring down your score by quite a bit. If you feel there is doubt between two, and you are unable to decide, leave those questions as well. You might attempt some of them, but attempting a lot is downright suicide. In cases where you feel that one option seems significantly more correct than the others, attempt it. You need to get a sense of your own instinct as to when to attempt and when not. As for the papers, you need to find out those chapters in which you have feel you have enough command that you'll be able to crack any question from it quite easily. For example, I used to look for limits, Inorganic chemistry, circles and atomic structure. These will help you in sorting questions you can attempt easily and save time. Also look for weaknesses and strengths, and whether you're loosing marks repeatedly in a particular section, example Multiple correct options, match matrix etc. Work on that, if there is something like this.
      Hope this helps!

Now you say that you're unable to score in tests. I'd advise you to decide your problems first and sort out the priority.

  29. Sir, I used to go through paper via 2 paths-
    1) select the sections with low -ve marking for all 3 subjects ,then with multiple correct and then the portions left .
    2) solve all those questions which I can do, immaterial to the section it belong with a maximum of 45 min In each subject and thus I get another 45 min. For tougher questions.

Which i must follow ,being pre decided about attempting paper may harm, what you suggest?
    Plz help ASAP.

    1. Generally, the second strategy works better. And yes, being predecided about your paper does harm sometimes when the pattern is unpredictable. Be firm, but not unshakeable with your strategy- that's all I can say.

    2. Thankx for the quick reply, now in last days should I solve any papers? Am currently focused on revising the subjects and mostly chemistry. My bitsat is on 25 th of may ,well am prepared for the advance so as bitsat too but ,150 question worry me a lot so what to do on 23,24 two days I have before bitsat?

      Delete
    3. Don't fear bitsat just for those 150 questions. Once you start attempting the paper, you'll quickly realize that many of them do not even require much thinking; you just need to read the question and click the correct answer. Go through some sample bitsat papers, and if you've already done so, gauge what all is asked in good proportions that is missing in your preparation- stuff like some unique reactions and their names in organic chemistry etc. That's the best you could do for bitsat.

  30. Hello sir, I'm preparing for JEE 2017.

I really need advice on how exactly should I cover up my 11th class potrtion again? It's like my theories and application (mostly) are clear though with a number of backlogs, but the twelfth class has enough pressure and I really need to do 11th again. I can only do 11th on sundays. Also, how should I do it? I mean, theory and problems distribution of time should be how much?

Will be waiting for your reply, sir.
